Dorothy Mae McKown passed peacefully at home with family on Aug. 6, 2013. She is now rejoicing in her new home with her Savior and many loved ones. She was born on June 23, 1921, in Lone Grove, to Jess Mitchell Sr. and Grace Lewis Mitchell.
She graduated from Lone Grove High School at the age of 15 as Dorothy Mae Mitchell. She married Ray McKown in 1939, and they eventually moved from Lone Grove to the Plainview area. In 1954, they moved to the Springdale area where they owned and operated McKown's Dairy until 1970. Early in their marriage, she and Ray loved performing with the Ardmore Riding Club's high-speed synchronized horseback riding team known as the Quadrille.
Dorothy was proud to be active in the Carter County Home Demonstration Club for many years, and shall we say she "saw to it" that her children remained very active in the 4-H Club and any other activity she deemed essential to the development of character and responsibility.
She loved Springdale School and everything it stood for and was always proud to "take the lead" or at least "take part" in anything that would help Springdale School remain the wonderful little school it was.
In 1978, at the age of 56, Dorothy returned to the books and became a realtor for the Ardmore area. For well over 20 years, she was a very successful realtor in the area due in large part to her unfailing honesty and integrity. If you have lived in this area very long and you have never bought a home with Dorothy's help, then more than likely, someone in your family has. Her great number of repeat customers and referrals from those with whom she had worked spoke volumes about her attitude about life and how to treat your fellow man.
But of all of her accomplishments, if you asked Dorothy what the highlight of her life was, you can be assured she would say that it was raising her four children with undying, unconditional love and showering her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with that same unfailing love.
She is survived by her sons, Gene McKown and wife, Judy and Jim McKown and wife, Vicky; daughters Beth Choate and husband, Jerry and Sherry Boatman and husband, Shannon; grandsons Alan McKown and wife, Laurie, Michael McKown and wife, Alonie, Vernon McKown and wife, Ronda, Richard McKown and wife, Elizabeth, Jimmy Tynes and wife, Alyssa and Jacob Tynes; granddaughters Lori Harrison and husband, Jeddie Jr., Leah Aldridge and husband, Stacy and Ali Taylor and husband, Shields; great-grandchildren Alex McKown, Levi McKown, Macy McKown, Olivia McKown, Madeline McKown, Chapman McKown, Tripp Harrison, Maleah Harrison, J.D. Aldridge, Landon Leverett, Tallie Tynes and Trey Tynes; and special family friend Mary Beth McClain.
