TACOMA, Wash. Betty Zieg French, 76, of Tacoma, Wash., died June 12, 2007.

Memorial services were June 16 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Lakewood, Wash., where her ashes have been placed in the Columbarium.

Mrs. French was born Dec. 30, 1930, at Grand Island to Henry Peter and Clara Zieg.

Survivors of the immediate family include her husband, Richard French; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth French Truesdell and Joel Truesdell of Hilo, Hawaii; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Laura French of Sunnyvale, Calif.; and a sister, Mary Reitan of Grand Island.

---

Additional survivors include two grandchildren, three nieces and a nephew.

Overlooking the yard and garden she loved to tend, Betty French died peacefully, in Tacoma, Wash., surrounded by immediate family following a recent recurrence of cancer. Her life was marked by loving service to God, family, and friends, as well as associations with church and PEO.

Born in Grand Island to Henry Peter and Clara Zieg, Betty graduated from Grand Island High School in 1948, then attended Doane College in Crete and St. Margaret's House in Berkeley, Calif., where she trained as a Christian education director. She married a young Episcopal seminarian, Richard French, in 1958, and they moved in 1959 to Washington State, where they enjoyed the remainder of their 48 years together. Homemaking and raising their children were two of Betty's greatest joys. Betty also applied her administrative skills in her 12-year career at the Pacific Lutheran University Library in Tacoma.

Her genuine smile and personal interest in others infused her conversations and relationships. Encouraging people, plants, and projects to grow was one of Betty's profoundest gifts. She creatively helped people and made the world more beautiful. An attentive listener and faithful friend, Betty lived a full, compassionate and rich life.

Memorials may be sent to The American Cancer Society; Group Health Hospice Foundation, Tacoma, WA; or St. Mary's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund (Lakewood, WA).
