Obituary of Mrs. Mellie Sports

Mrs. Mellie Gibson Sports, 67, of 2001 3rd Loop Road, died Friday afternoon in a Florence hospital after a long illness. She was the widow of the late C.W. Sports, Sr., who died in 1962.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Arthur Martin in Waters Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Bristol Chapel Cemetery.

Mrs. Sports was born in Georgetown County, a daughter of the late Merritt Parrott and Lavenia Parrott. She was a housewife and had lived in Florence since 1948. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church of Rhems.

Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. G.E. Leviner of Florence, Mrs. R.V. Graham of Summerton, Mrs. C.L. Purvis of St. Stephens, Mrs. Leo W. Hyman of Kirtland AFB, N.M., Mrs. John R. Calcutt of Florence and Mrs. Carl D. Lee Sr. of Florence; three sons, Charlie W. Sports, Jr. of Florence, George W. Sports of Charleston and William D. Sports of Florence; two sisters, Mrs. Eva Hucks of Dillon and Mrs. Mae Locklair of St. Stephens; 34 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Note: She was the daughter of Joseph Henry Gibson (1870-1908) and Eliza Jordan (b. c 1880). She was adopted and raised by the Parrotts when she was three years old.
