Gloria Charlotte Conwell Fortier
8/06/1927 - 4/22/2012
Gloria Charlotte Colwell Fortier, a long time resident of Santa Rosa, unexpectedly passed away April 22, 2012, in Auburn, California. She died of pneumonia after a brief hospitalization at age 84.
Gloria was born August 6, 1927, in Santa Rosa to Russel and Mildred Colwell. She graduated from Santa Rosa High School early in order to marry her high school sweetheart Jimmy Walter Orbin Fortier, son of Coach and Dean of Boys Orbin Fortier. After their marriage on February 11, 1945, Gloria joined him in Carlsbad, N.M. where he served in the Army Air Corps as a pilot and instructor training bombardier cadets. Later in 1945 Gloria and Jim returned to Santa Rosa where Gloria was a homemaker, raising their two children. From 1954 to 1969 she worked in her husband's TV sales, service and communications business. After selling their business, they moved to Lake Tahoe where Gloria had vacationed since early childhood and where Jim and Gloria had owned a cabin since 1959. Gloria worked for a plumbing company and eventually got her Real Estate license, selling properties on the Lake's West Shore. She and Jim moved to Pine Grove for 1½ years where Gloria worked for a realty company before returning to Santa Rosa in 1980 to help care for Jim's dad. She worked part-time for an insurance firm until late 1986 when Jim's dad died. She and Jim immediately retired and spent the next seven years traveling in an RV before settling down in Auburn in late 1994 to be near their son and family.
Devoted to each other, Gloria and Jim enjoyed similar interests: reading, playing cribbage, listening to music, taking walks, watching sports together, spending time with family and friends, taking trips to both Tahoe and and the Feather River country, and, most importantly, maintaining a healthy sense of humor.
In October 2002, after 57½ years of marriage, Gloria lost the love of her life, Jim, following his five year battle with Lewy Body Disease, a Parkinson syndrome.
Known for her genuine warmth, kind heart, and sweet nature, Gloria always kept a positive outlook. She experienced life with gusto, easily breaking into her beautiful smile that lit up her face and anyone nearby. She continued going to Parkinson's Caregivers' luncheons and joined the Widowed Persons Association where she participated in fun activities, eventually finding companionship and love with Paul (Tiny) Hansen. Though she had experienced some decline in health in the last few years, she never lost her sense of humor or joy in spending time with family.
Gloria will be dearly missed by her daughter, Susan Fortier Gregg of Carmel Valley; her son, Orbin (Connie) Fortier of Roseville; her two granddaughters Heather (Ayman) Hijawi of Roseville and Holly (Kevin) Letcher of Newcastle; her seven great-grandchildren, Sabrina, Athena, Kareena, Yousef, Ellina, and Yasmena Hijawi of Roseville and Hannah Mae Letcher of Newcastle; her only nephew Russel Colwell III of Florida; her only 1st cousin Marilyn (Musselman) Von Berg of Carmel Valley and her four children; and Gloria's companion for the last 8½ years, Paul (Tiny) Hansen of Auburn. Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy W. O. Fortier in 2002, and her only brother, Russell Colwell, Jr., in 2001.
A celebration of her life will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on June 2, 2012 at the Golden Chain Mobile Home Park Clubhouse, 2540 Grass Valley Highway, Auburn.
