John C. Bowen
(March 12, 1939 - April 12, 2007)

John C. "J.C." Bowen, 68, of White Cloud, KS, died late Thursday evening, April 12, 2007, at the home of his daughter in Topeka, KS.

J.C. was born March 12, 1939 in rural Brown County, one of four children of John G. and Esther May Taylor Bowen.

He grew up near White Cloud where he attended Shore Country School prior to attending school in Reserve. He then went to White Cloud High School where he played basketball and graduated with the class of 1957. J.C. served with Kansas National Guard of Hiawatha from 1956 until 1963. He later served with the Missouri Air Guard at Rosecrans Airfield at Elwood, KS from 1981 until 1984, discharged at the rank of E-4. He farmed and raised livestock in the White Cloud area for 50 years before retiring in February. Mr. Bowen was a member of the Fox Hunting Club and the Saddle Club, both of White Cloud. J.C. enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the rodeo, and gardening.

He was married to Phyllis Simpson from 1957 until 1974. Phyllis was his caregiver during the duration of his illness. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Danny Bowen of Troy, KS; two daughters Carla Swoyer and husband Mike of Topeka, KS, Tara Hinton and husband Kirby of Overland Park, KS; three sisters Betty Johansen and husband Ed of Kansas City, KS, Rose Baker and husband Wayne of Hiawatha, KS, Eileen Ogg and husband Harold of White Cloud, KS; 5 grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Howard "Shorty" Rosenberger, and a niece Rayna Baker.

Funeral services are planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland. Pastor Jerry Petering will officiate. Interment will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in the Mt. Zion Community, northeast of Hiawatha, KS.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Monday where the family will meet with friends from 6:30 until 8 that evening.
