The Elgin death information for Mary Peyton was probably given by her husband J.M. Peyton since the couple had no children and he was still living. The record noted that she had lived in Illinois for 42 years which, assuming that they came directly to Kane County, would have made their arrival in Dundee Township during 1838.
Though the couple did not appear on the 1840 census, J.M. Peyton did appear as a voter in Dundee Township 3 April 1841. Soon after the 1850 census, J.M. purchased property in Elgin on Broadway (currently called State Street) where he was the proprietor of a grocery. They had a house on Bridge Street (now called Chicago Street) which was just around the corner from the grocery store.
Because Mary died shortly before her husband, the probate papers for J.M. Peyton revealed a look into the life of this couple. The Real Estate Inventory totaled $11,017.00 and the list of personal property was extensive.
The administratrix purchased two gravestones for the couple and the probate file for J.M. included a "Cemetery Deed. The South ½ of Lot No 12 in Blk No 16 in the Plat of the Elgin Cemetery as laid out and recorded in the office of the City Clerk." This would have been the Channing Street Cemetery.
No record can be found that this couple and/or their stones were moved to the new city cemetery on Bluff City Boulevard.
