Larry Junior Hale was born March 14, 1947 at Cheyenne Agency, South Dakota, to Robert and Isabelle (Ward) Hale. He attended grade school in Cherry Creek and St. Joseph's Indian School in Chamberlain. He went on to attend Eagle Butte High School.
In 1967, Larry enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving several tours of duty in Vietnam. Larry was a highly decorated soldier, receiving numerous awards, including a purple heart for wounds received in connection with military operations against hostile fire and an Army commendation medal for exceptionally meritorious service in support of military operations against communist aggression in the Republic of Vietnam.
