Daily Appeal – Dec 4, 1900, page 1 DUST TO DUST: The Remains of Late C. L. Foss to be Interred at Brownsville - The remains of the late Charles L. Foss who died in Leland, Oregon, on Friday, arrived in this city on the Oregon Express Sunday morning, and were laid in state at the undertaking parlors of R. E. Bevan.
The funeral will take place to-day under the auspices of Brownsville Lodge, No. 283, I.O.O.F., at Brownsville, interment in the Foss cemetery.
The late C. L. Foss came to California in June, 1857, settling first at Nevada City, from which place he shortly afterwards removed to New York Flat where he filled the position of "Boss" for a mining company. In 1863 he went East via the Isthmus to Bridgeford, Maine, where he married Miss Emma J. Partridge of that city returning with her shortly afterwards to California. The union was blessed with five children, three girls and two boys. Mrs. Foss who was blind for four years prior to her demise died in 1878. In 1883 Mr. Foss went to Colorado to superintend a mine but returning after a time was in charge of a large crew of men for A. M. Leach in the hey day of that gentleman's activity. In 1891 deceased was sent to Alaska in the interests of a German mining company. Later on he was in Idaho for a time superintending a mine following which his vocation took him to Leland, Oregon, where he was employed at the time of his late sickness.
Mr. Foss was well known all over the county as one of our leading gravel miners. He was a member of Marysville Encampment, no. 6, I.O.O.F., of this city and of the Brownsville Lodge of Odd Fellows.
