Melvin always used only his initials, M. D., and went by the nickname given to him by his mother as a child, Curly, due to his curly mop of hair. He graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 1932. He finally settled in Richmond, CA, where he married Stirling Kitchen, and had one son. After losing Stirling he married, and adopted the daughter of, Neva (Eyre) Durst. This second marraige was troubled and ended in divorce. He was a carpenter by trade, and worked as that, and later as foreman, for the maintenance department of the California Spray Chemical Co. in Richmond (original makers of Ortho Garden products). He suffered a disabling stroke in 1996 and was living in a convalesent hospital in Sacramento, CA, near his son at the time of his death. He was cremated and his ashes placed in the crypt of his first wife, the loss of whom he never got over.
