Eldon R. Akers, 90, of Colmar, died on Thursday, July 16, 2009, at the Hancock County Shelter Care Home in Augusta.
He was born on July 14, 1919, in Burnside, IL a son of Sidney T. and Almettie P. Simmons Akers. He married Evelyn V. Dixon on Jan 24, 1948, in Columbia, Mo. She passed away on Aug. 15, 2006.
Eldon is survived by two sons, Harold (Debbie) Daniels of Colmar and Howard (Shari) Daniels of Macomb; seven grandchildren: Melanie Gregoire, Melinda Daniels, Melissa Lovell-Love, Michelle Kerr, Melissa Lemke, Justin Daniels and Andrew Daniels; 20 great-grandchildren: Courtney Rossmark, T.C. Robison, Blaine Oliver, Lyle Daniels, Laura Daniels, Mark Lovell, Christian Lovell, Marissa Lovell, Ali Kerr, Abi Kerr, Ani Kerr, Carson Kerr, Kiley Daniels, Judd Daniels, Caitlyn Daniels, Matthew Lemke, Bradley Lemke, Taylor Lemke and Gabrielle Daniels; one great-great-grandson, Avrin Latham; and one brother, James (Edna) Akers of Carthage.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Avery Allen; and three brothers, Adron, George, and Loren Akers.
Eldon was a retired farmer and school bus driver of many years. His student riders adored him and they knew the feeling was mutual. He attended St. Mary Baptist Church in St. Mary, IL. He enjoyed fishing, bowling and spending time with his beloved family. He was a WWII Army veteran serving his country with the Third Infantry Division.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 18, at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Plymouth with Rev. Tom Spain officiating. Burial with military rites by Plymouth American Legion Post # 912 was in St. Mary Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the St. Mary Cemetery Association.
Eldon will be missed in our community.
