Here is some biographical information about my Great, Great Grandmother Mary, nee Dush, Cowden.

On an 1850 Hanover Township, District # 2, Ashland County, Ohio census record dated September 19, 1850, I found a Mary Dush along with her father, Joseph Dush, age 45, born in Germany, mother, Catherine Dush, age 47, born in Germany, sister, Catherine Dush, age 15, born in Germany, Mary Dush, age 13, born in Ohio, brother, George Dush, age 12, born in Ohio, and brother, Jacob Dush, age 7, born in Ohio.

These Dush family members were on lines 28-33 of this 1850 Ohio census record.

I also found an 1860 South District, Dry Point Township, Shelby County, Illinois census record dated June 23, 1860 showing a Henry M. Cowden, age 29, born in Ohio, his wife, Mary Cowden, age 22, born in Ohio, a Joseph Dush, probably Mary Cowden's brother, age 28, born in Pennsylvania, and a George Dush, also probably a brother of Mary Cowden, age 21, and born in Ohio. These Cowden and Dush family members are on lines 22-26 of this 1860 census record.

From the ages listed on these 1850 and 1860 census records for Mary, nee Dush, Cowden, it appears that Mary, nee Dush, Cowden, was born sometime between June 23rd and September 19th of 1837.

============================================================

Mary Dush Cowden was the first wife of Henry Marcus Cowden. Henry Cowden founded the town of Cowden, Illinois in 1872.

Mary Dush was born in 1837 in Ohio to Joseph and Catharine Dush.

Mary Dush Cowden and Henry Cowden had two sons, Joseph H. Cowden and George Harrison Cowden.

After Mary Cowden's death in 1860, Henry Cowden married the former widow, Mrs. Susan Catherine, nee Thorn, Timbers, and had two more sons, Jacob Edward Cowden and my Great Grandfather Charles Anson Cowden.

============================================================

I've added two pictures that I took of three smaller stones near the larger tombstones for Henry Marcus Cowden, his first wife, Mary Dush Cowden, and his first son, Joseph H. Cowden.

I believe that these three smaller stones are foot stones for the graves of Henry Marcus Cowden, Mary Dush Cowden, and Joseph H. Cowden.

The initials carved on the three smaller stones are what I believe to be H.M.C., M.C., and J.H.C., which would match up with the names of the three people that are buried in this location.

My distant Cowden relative, Dorothy Carruth, believes that these three smaller stones are the grave markers for Marcus M. Cowden and his family.

The only way to know which of us is correct about these three smaller stones would be to find a copy of the paperwork ordering these three stones to be made and see who the stones were supposed to be for.

Here are three of the siblings of Mary, nee Dush, Cowden listed in the probate records for Mary's father, Joseph Dush:

Catharine, nee Dush, Huffer, wife of Noah Huffer.
Joseph Dush.
Jacob C. Dush and his wife was Mary Catharine, nee Petty, Dush.

I included a copy of that probate record for Joseph Dush so you can see the names of the family members. The minor child of Mary, nee Dush, Cowden is mentioned in that probate record for Joseph Dush and that minor child would have been George Harrison Cowden, since the only other child of Mary, nee Dush, Cowden had died in 1859 while Mary, nee Dush, Cowden was still alive. That other deceased child was Joseph H. Cowden.

I found a death record for a son of Jacob C. Dush and his wife, Mary Catharine, nee Petty, Dush and that deceased son's name was Simon Dush and he was born in January of 1892 in Illinois and he died on December 16, 1914 in Marion, Marion County, Ohio after complications, including pneumonia, from falling off of a telegraph pole while working for the Western Union telegraph company.

Other children of Jacob Dush and his wife Mary Catharine, nee Petty, Dush were:

Walter Joseph Dush was born in May of 1875 in Illinois and he died on November 5, 1930 in Tarrant County, Texas.

Ruby Pearl, nee Dush, Hatfill born in February of 1896 in Illinois and her husband was Floyd Henry Hatfill. Ruby Pearl, nee Dush, Hatfill died in September of 1980 in Cowden, Shelby County, Illinois.

John Wallace Dush was born on September 19, 1897 in Illinois and he died in July of 1969 in Shelby County, Illinois.

William B. Dush was born in September of 1899 in Illinois and he died in 1959 in Shelby County, Illinois.
