Joseph Koca, son of Vaclav Koca and Anna Sopr was born in Zebnice, kraj Pizen, Czechoslovakia, December 24, 1860. He passed away at his home, April 7, 1950, at the age of 89 years, 3 months and 13 days.
In the fall of 1872, at the age of eleven, he with his parents and their children came to America and settled in Braidwood, Ill., where Joseph and his father worked in the coal mines.
In 1874, the came to Milligan to visit Frank Kotas, a family that at one time lived in Czechoslovakia and decided to remain. Milligan at this time wasn't settled, and they had to get mail at Exeter. They made their first home in a dugout west of what is now Milligan.
February 13, 1888, Mr Koca was united in marriage to Barbara Eret at Wibur. They moved to a farm south of Milligan, where Mrs. Koca passed away thirteen months later, their small son Joseph passed away nine months after the death of his mother.
July 9, 1889, Mr Koca was married to Mary Chlup, they having a double wedding with his brother, Vaclav Koca. To this union were born five children, two sons and three daughters. The youngest girl, died at the age of thirteen days.
Mr. Koca lived on the same farm for sixty-three years. He leaves to mourn his two sons, Cyril, who has taken care of the father since the death of the mother twenty-three years ago, and Jim; one daughter, Mrs. Louis (Agnes) Kaderabek; five grandchildren, twin sisters, Mrs. Frank Hamouz and Mrs Antonie Hamouz, and a host of relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Mary, who passed away May 2, 1927, his oldest daughter Amelia Podlesak, who passed away December 7, 1939, and a granddaughter Mildred Podlesak, March 7, 1932, three brothers Vaclav, Frank and Albert Koca, and sister Mary.
He was a member of the Z.C.B.J. lodge Svatopluk Czech forty two years.
