(Ref: CARLSBAD CURRENT-ARGUS, Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico, reads as follows:

ARTESIA-- Services for Ernest F. Almanza, 80, of N. 6th Street, will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church with Father Vincent Petersen officiating. Burial will follow at San Marcos Cemetery.

Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. today at the church.

Mr. Almanza died Sunday, June 7, 1998 at Artesia General Hospital.

Terpening and Son Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

He was born Feb. 6, 1918, at Oro Grande, N.M., to Jesus and Catalina Flores Almanza. He moved to Artesia from Cloudcroft in 1932.

Mr. Almanza married Anna Lopez on May 1, 1944, in Artesia.

He served military duty in the Aleutian Islands with Company F, 197th Infantry and received the Asian Pacific Theater Ribbon with one bronze Battle Star, the World War II Victory Medal, three overseas Service Bars, the American Theater Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Almanza was a former Eddy County sheriff's deputy and retired from Navajo Refinery. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 3rd Order of St. Frances Cursillistas, Knights of Columbus, New Mexico Sheriffs and Police Association, Fraternal Order of Police and International Union of Operating Engineers.

He was preceded in death by his wife Anna on June 30, 1997.

Survivors are sons, Anthony P. Almanza and Ernest G. Almanza Jr., both of Artesia and Manuel Almanza of Oakland, Calif.; daughters, Julie Rodriguez of Juneau, Alaska, and Maria Almanza of Washington, D.C.; sisters, Consuelo Solis of Juarez, Ruth Montoya of Oakland, Calif., Lala Gallardo of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Mary Carillo of El Monte, Calif., Frances Guillen of La Habra, Calif., and Emma Gallardo of La Puente, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.

Pallbearers are Jerome Aguilar, Joe Aguilar, Daniel Bejarno, Joshua Garcia, Raul Rodriguez and Richard Frazee.
