James and his wife Mary Jane (nee Mabey) were the first couple married in the newly built church, Christ Church Taita which was built by Sydney Hirst in 1853 and had it's first service on the 1st January 1854.

James and Mary were married on the 11th January 1854 when he was 21 and she was 27.

- They had 11 children from 1863 to 1879.

He died aged 64, 24 years before her - she is also buried in Sandon Cemetery
