RESEARCH IN PROGRESS
Sarah Matilda was actually born as Sarah Matilda Arnold. She and her sister Susan Alzada Arnold and their mom Beady are found in the 1850 US Census in Moss, LaFayette, Arkansas. They are found in this same census living next door to Daniel Arnold and his family, and this same Daniel Arnold household is found living in the same area as Sarah's family in Texas.
It is not clear who Sarah Matilda or Susan Alzada's father was, or whether their mother Beady's married name was Arnold, or if their mothers maiden name was Arnold.
On May 11, 1851, Sarah's mother Beady Arnold married Chesley (or Cherley) Rogers in Union, Arkansas. And on Feb 22, 1853 in Columbia, Arkansas, Beady Rogers is found marrying a Keneth Merritt.
Both girls (Sarah Matilda and Susan Alzada) married using their 1st step-fathers surname of Rogers.
On death certificates for Beady's children her maiden name varies from Rowan, Royn and Arnall.
On death certificates for Sarah Matilda's children her maiden varies from Rogers or Merritt (both of her step-fathers surnames).
And on death certificates for Sarah Matilda's sister Susan Alzada children, her maiden name varies from Rogers, Merritt and Arnold.
Some called her Tilda, and others called her Tillie.
Matilda's mothers name was Beatrice. Beatrice went by the nickname Beady (Beatta). There are a few possibilities as to Beatrice's maiden name: Royn, Rowan, Arnall, Goff, or Arnold.
Matilda had tow step-fathers. Chesley (or Cherley) Rogers and Kenyan Merritt.
In the 1870 census, Matilda's last name is listed as Merritt with the household. Because of this, some census's show her as her birth surname of Rogers, and also as Merritt.
It appears that in 1871, Matilda had her first child William Alfred Sheppard. William Alfred Sheppards father was William Alfred Sheppard Sr. Matilda never married William ALfred Shephard, and when she married Seborn "Cebe" Goins in 1880, she listed her name as Matilda Rogers. Also interesting is that in the 1880 census, her son William Alfred Sheppard is listed as William Goins with the rest of the Goins household.
In her obituary, it lists William Alfred Sheppard as one of her sons.
According to her granddaughter Lillian Augusta Meyers-Sanders (daughter of Matilda's youngest child Duvie Goins) in year 2012, grandma Matilda moved out of her home with her husband Seborn Goins and "took up with a Sheppard!". Well, after some research, that statement is true, in that it appears Matilda and Seborn separated in their twilight years, with Matilda moving in with her eldest son by a different man William A Sheppard and his wife Agnes..and Seborn Goins moving in with his son Leonard Goins.
The following are Matilda's children, with all but William Alfred Sheppard being fathered by Seborn Goins:
William Alfred "Al" Shepard 1871 – 1934
John Henry Goins 1875 – 1907
William D Goins (aka Bert or Bud) 1878 – 1959
Daniel Goins 1879 – death before 1900 census
Frank Presley Goins 1881 – 1959
Leonard Goins 1885 – 1957
Henrietta "Etta" Beatrice Goins 1884 – 1942
Effie May Goins 1886 – 1932
Duvie G Goins 1889 – 1920

Buried by family
According to Tilda's great granddaughter Shirley June Chittenden (who is the granddaughter of Tilda's son William Alfred Shepard), Tilda is not buried in Kingston as originally believed as stated in the mortuary record for her. Her Great granddaughter Shirley June Chittenden in 2014 clearly remembers her mother (Tilda's granddaughter) telling her several times that her great grandmother was buried by her son William Sheppard in the Hillsboro cemetery. No cemetery records to substantiate this exists.
In the Sierra County Burial Records, it lists Matilda as Divorced, that Jack Swingle reported her death, and that her son William Sheppard took possession of her body and she was to be buried in Kingston. Her son William Sheppard and his wife are buried in the Kingston Cemetery.
Another interesting item concerning Matilda is that in some census's she will list herself as a widow, and some not. And on her death certificate it lists her as a widow. On the Mortuary Records she is as divorced It is believed that she was not divorced but had for quite some time lived separated from her husband.
