(Known as "Lynn Evans" to her San Diego Union-Tribune coworkers)

Emma Lynn Brooke of La Mesa passed away on Sept 6, 2007 with family by her side. Born in Magdalena, NM to Frank and Geraldine White, she was the second oldest of nine children. A sister, Rosemary, died in 1943 at age two.

In 1939, the family moved about 10 miles outside of Fence Lake, NM and homesteaded land they called the "Jaralosa." Around 1941, the growing family traded the Jaralosa property for the "Jaramillo Ranch" which was closer to Fence Lake. White's Ranch, as it is now known, is still owned by the family. Emma's family briefly went to Oregon during World War II to work in the Navy shipyards.

The house in Fence Lake was small and was built of rock and mud and had dirt floors. All the children endured long hours tending to the crops they grew in their fields; mainly pinto beans. They also raised and sold livestock. When Emma was about 15 years old, the inside of the rock house was destroyed when their kerosene-powered refrigerator caught fire. The family moved up the hill into a Hogan, which was graciously built for them by the neighboring Navajo Indian Reservation. Her family did rebuild, and the new house had hardwood floors and indoor plumbing!

Emma graduated from Fence Lake High School in 1957, the only girl in a class of four. Shortly after graduation, she moved to California to begin a new life, living with her late Aunt Emma in La Mesa.

She soon found employment with the San Diego Union-Tribune Publishing Company as a "copy kid" in the editorial department, then moved a few years later to the classified advertising department. She used the telephone alias "Miss Lynn Evans" when dealing with the public, as did most of the classified employees back then.

In 1959, she married John N. Tuisl and had two children, Teresa and John. Emma's husband John died unexpectedly from complications of Epilepsy in 1971 at age 34. Emma eventually married Brian J. Brooke, and they had daughter Victoria. Emma's second husband Brian died suddenly of a heart attack in 1985 at age 43.

Emma continued her work at the newspaper, moving from classifieds to writing the paid obituaries in the early 1990s.

She was an extremely loyal employee who rarely missed a day of work, and her coworkers will fondly remember how she always wore her telephone headset, even on her break times. She retired from the Union-Tribune in 2002 after working there for nearly 45 years.

Emma is survived by her children Teresa Webster (Curtis) of Waynesboro, Tenn, John C. Tuisl of La Mesa, and Victoria Pietrusiewicz (Ken) of La Mesa; sisters Rita Stock, Virginia McDorman, Beatrice Montano (Clot), and Rosie Cogwell (Don) all of Fence Lake, NM, Ida Stokes (Danny) of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Peggy Pino (Tommy) of Gallup, NM, and brother Daniel White (Evelyn) of Zuni, NM; her four grandchildren Sean Tuisl of Spring Valley, Stephanie Cotromano and Emmalee Burleson of Waynesboro, TN and Cynthia Rosenbalm of Columbia, TN; five great-grandchildren Jonathan Bradford, Champagne Cotromano, Giavanna Bradford and Tana Burleson all of Waynesboro, TN, and Elizabeth Brown of Columbia, TN, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Local services will be held on Wed, Oct 3, 2007, at Conrad Lemon Grove Mortuary with Visitation from 5-7pm and the Memorial Service at 6pm. Her Service and inurnment in Fence Lake, NM will be held on Saturday, Oct 6, 2007.

Until we are reunited in Heaven, she will be sadly missed and never forgotten by all of her family and friends. Published in U-T San Diego on Sept. 23, 2007
