The Rt. Rev. William Davidson, retired Episcopal Church bishop, was born in Miles City, July 20, 1919, and died May 8, 2006, in Loveland, Colo. He married Mary Shoemaker, formerly of Helena, on June 3, 1942, in Helena. They have made their retirement home in Loveland, since August, 1987.

The Rt. Rev. William (Bill) Davidson, retired Bishop of the Episcopal Church, was born in Miles City, Montana, July 20, 1919 and died May 8, 2006 in Loveland, Colorado. He graduated from Montana State University with a bachelor's degree in 1940 and taught Vocational Agriculture in Sidney, Montana until 1943 when he went to Berkeley Divinity School in New Haven, Connecticut, graduating with an S.T.B. in 1946. He was ordained Deacon in August, 1946 and Priest on St. Mark's Day, April 25, 1947. From 1946 to 1952 he was Vicar in charge of churches in Townsend, White Sulphur Springs and Martinsdale, Montana. From 1952 until 1956 he was Rector at St. James' Church in Lewistown, Montana.
In 1956 Davidson joined the staff of the National Council of the Episcopal Church in New York City as Associate Secretary of the Division of Town and Country Work. He held this position until 1962 when he became Rector of Grace Church, Jamestown, North Dakota. He was serving this church when he was elected Bishop of the Diocese of Western Kansas in 1965. He was consecrated Bishop on Epiphany, January 6, 1966, and served until 1980 when he became Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Ohio. He retired in July, 1986.
As a retired Bishop, he served as an assisting Bishop in the Dioceses of Indianapolis, Central New York, Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, Rio Grande and Colorado.
In 1966 he received an honorary DD from Berkeley Divinity School and in 1978 an honorary Doctor of Laws from the Episcopal Seminary in Lexington, Kentucky. His special interests have been rural and small churches, interfaith and ecumenical relations, and Christian peacemaking. He has held many official and voluntary state and national church offices. In 1997 he co-authored a book "VISION FULFILLING" which is the story of the rural and small community work in the Episcopal Church during the twentieth century.
Bill married Mary Shoemaker of Helena, Montana, on June 3, 1942. He and Mary are parents of four children - Carol (Ron) Carpenter, Bemidji, Minnesota; Tom (Lillian Shirley), Portland, Oregon; George (Sally McHale), Denver, Colorado, and Bob (Linda Brower), Loveland, Colorado. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. They have made their retirement home in Loveland, Colorado, since August, 1987.
While in Loveland, Bill has been active in many voluntary activities including Rotary, Habitat for Humanity, Kairos Prison Ministry, Loveland Peacemakers, and All Saints Episcopal Church. A Requiem Eucharist will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 11, 2006, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 3440 North Taft Avenue, Loveland, Colorado. The Right Rev. Robert (Rob) O'Neill, Bishop of Colorado, The Rev. Sathi Bunyan, The Rev. Robert P. Davidson, and the Clergy of Colorado, officiating. His ashes will be interred in the All Saint's Columbarium following the service. Memorials may be directed to the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund or to All Saints Episcopal Church, Loveland, Colorado.
