Francis Boykin, second son of Burwell Boykin and the former Elizabeth Whitaker, was born January 13th 1785 at the family home on the lower side of Swift Creek in Kershaw County, South Carolina. His father was a successful planter and acquired large tracts of land in the area. His mother died when Francis was just two and a half, so it was his step-mother/aunt, Mary Whitaker, that raised him and his sixteen siblings.

In 1810, Francis married Mary Darrington James, daughter of Samuel James and the former Mary "Polly" Darrington, with whom he had nine children:
Burwell (1813-1857)
Mary (1816-1822)
Francis (1818-1900)
Betsy (1821-1822)
James (1823-1907)
Starke Hunter (1825-1832)
Robert Darrington (1828-1884)
Samuel Thomas (1830-1891)
Robert Hayne (1832-1874)

In 1818, Francis Boykin moved his family from South Carolina to Alabama; first settling in Conecuh County. But seeking better farmland, Francis bought land in Dallas County, Alabama and found the land here to be more suitable for cotton. Soon Francis accumulated a large plantation.

Francis Boykin departed this life at the age of 54 years on the 6th of October 1839. He was laid to rest in the family cemetery.
