There will be a wake for William Batson "Bat" Ned, 76, at 6 p.m. Monday at Griffin-Hillcrest Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel with the Rev. Randy Baptiste officiating. Interment will be at Pleasant Oak Cemetery, Enville.
Born April 8, 1930 at Enville to Mose and Leola McCurtain Ned, he died Nov. 22, 2006, at his Ardmore residence. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mary Helen Boston and Mildred Louise Ned, and step-father, Clarence Porter.
Bat enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country for 15 years as a signal corpsman aboard aircraft carriers USS Saratoga, USS Mullany and USS Enterprise. In 1968 he received an honorable medical discharge. After returning home, he worked as a sheet metal worker.
Bat enjoyed playing and singing country western music on his guitar. He will be remembered for the joy his music brought to his family. He enjoyed reading and studying the Bible faithfully.
Survivors include his companion, Cynthia Watson, Ardmore; sister, Winnie McNeely, Ardmore; brother, Carns Porter, Ardmore; Cynthia's children, Serena Santos and Linda French; son, Bobby Watson; grandson, Bryan Watson, all Ardmore; and one aunt, Lena Farve, Enville.
Bearer are nephews and great-nephews. Honorary bearers are Jim Marris Jr., Coby Poe, B.G. Caldwell, James Ingram, Jerome Smith, Tom Farve and the Ned twins.
The family will receive friends Monday evening.
