Betty Achuff was the daughter of Guy Stough and Besse Coates Stough. She had one sister who survived through adulthood, Thelma Arizoni Stough Kohley. She had two other siblings that were twins, both of whom died in infancy, Donald and Donna/Connie. She grew up in Findlay, Ohio and attended the Findlay College Conservatory of Music. She married William Cregar Achuff and they made their home in Forest Park, Illinois. They had one son named Quentin. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxillary.
One evening, Betty and 5 year-old Quentin were returning from a club meeting with some neighbors when their vehicle was struck by another car on the side. The impact killed Betty, but Quentin was able to escape the vehicle and run a block home to call for help. No one else was injured in the accident. The driver of the other vehicle walked into the local market and began bragging that he killed Betty Achuff. The store owner promptly banned the man from the store.
Betty was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park, Illinois. Beside her grave is her husband, William "Bill", who joined her in heaven several months later. Their son was raised by Bill's sister, Louise Achuff.
