Joe Mike Birchum, 77, of Edmond, Oklahoma, passed away suddenly at his home on April 7, 2009. Joe was born to J. Harold and Marlyn Birchum in Norman, Okla. He graduated from Norman High School and joined the Air Force during the Korean Conflict serving as an airplane mechanic and mechanical instructor. He worked as a journeyman electrician for his father's electrical business and received Undergraduate and Master's degrees in Geology from the University of Oklahoma in 1957 and 1963 respectively. He married Barbara Carol Pounds of Purcell, Okla. on April 24, 1954 in Norman, Okla. and they had 3 daughters, Gina, Lisa and Lindie. His career was spent working for Atlantic Richfield Company and forming the partnership as president of BHP Energy during his retirement years. He was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and past president of the American Institute of Professional Geologists. Joe's hobbies included a lifelong love for aviation. He owned and flew various airplanes throughout his life, including his last project of rebuilding and restoring his antique Steerman bi-wing airplane. He was a member of the National Bi-Plane Association and a life member of the Navy Alumni Club. On June 2, 2006, he married Frances Patterson of Edmond, Oklahoma at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City. Joe is survived by his current wife, Frances Birchum daughter, Lisa Boepple and husband Fred daughter, Gina Fletcher daughter, Lindie Slater and husband Philip stepson, Chuck Zimmerman and fiancee Timberly Sisco stepdaughter, Joanna High and husband Tim 10 grandchildren, Jessica Rae Fletcher, Matthew Fletcher, Michael Fletcher, Dani Boepple, Jamie Boepple, Amy White, Aly Slater, Cody High, Casey High and Ayden High. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother James Harold Jr., brother Bobby, and first wife Barbara Birchum. The family would like to thank the Edmond Emergency Response Team, Police and Fire Depts. for their quick response, care and concern. Formal visitation is Thursday, April 9, 6:00 - 8:00 PM and Friday 9:00 - 11:00 AM at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly, Edmond, OK. Private graveside services will be Friday, April 10, at I.O.O.F. Cemetery followed by a public memorial service at 4:00 PM at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 2717 W. Hefner Road, Okla. City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the following: S.O.S. Ministry at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 2717 W. Hefner Road, Okla. City, OK 73120 Heartland Lab Rescue, P.O. Box 890430, Okla. City, OK 73189. Services are under the direction of the Matthews Funeral Home, Edmond, OK.
