Son of Christian and Susanna Staley.

Married Elizabeth Myers at Richland County, Ohio on October 19, 1854.

Enlisted as a private in Company E, 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 12, 1862. Discharged on February 27, 1863 following an injury to his right leg where he cut himself to the bone while chopping wood with an ax.
