Charles Barden was born 1896 in Chichester, England, the 5th of 7 known surviving children (5 boys/2 girls) born to portrait photographer Charles Hugh Barden (1861-1948) and Emily Sophia Baker (1862-1946) of England. He was the paternal grandson of Charles Barden (1836-France) and his wife Bertha, a fishmonger and poulterer who had lived in London for a decade before moving with his wife and family to Tunbridge Wells in Kent, England.

His father was a well-established portrait and landscape photographer in Chichester, when at age 46 he sold his business and immigrated with his family to the United States, arriving in Philadelphia in 1907 and later establishing himself in Raleigh.

Charles was about 11 years old when he came to the U.S. and he grew up in Raleigh and graduated NC State University and began his career in the banking industry in Raleigh, then removed to Clayton where he was associated with the Clayton Banking Co where he stayed for a number of years before entering the insurance business. He was a veteran of World War I (Sgt. NC 30th Div) and also served as Major in the NC
National Guard Quartermster Corps.

Charles married Blanche Ellis of Johnston County in 1925 and they were parents of two known children:

* Charles Barden, Jr. (1927-1978)
* Emily Mae Barden BAGLEY (1934)

Charles died in 1939 at age 43. His wife never remarried and died in 1987 at age 90. Son, Charles, was a well-known photographer in Clayton who chronicled in photos much of Clayton's daily life from the 1950s-1970s.

Charles Barden's siblings who immigrated with him to America included:

* Hugh Barden (1884-1949)
* Albert Barden (1889-1953)
* Daisy Barden RUSSELL (1890-1983)
