Shawnee resident James Deer (Pah nah kas kuk), 63, passed away of natural causes, Feb. 19, 2009, at Unity Medical Center North with his loving wife Glenda by his side. James was born on Dec. 10, 1946, to John Deer, Sr. and Irene (Atchico) Deer in Shawnee. James was a member of the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma and had lived in the Harrah area most of his life. He graduated from Harrah High School in 1963 and attended Haskell Indian School for 2 years. James enlisted in the Air Force during the Vietnam War and served from 1965 to 1969. After His discharge, James attended UCLA and received a Bachelor's Degree in Business. In his leisure time James attended Rose State College and Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech for an accounting refresher. He passed the CPA Exam and served three terms as Treasurer of the Kickapoo Tribe. James was proud of his Kickapoo heritage and participated in the Occupation of Alcatraz Island, San Francisco, Calif., during the early 1970's. James was preceded by his mother; father; sisters, Constance June Deer and Carmen "Penny" Frye; and brothers, Duane Deer and L. Anthony Deer. James is survived by his brothers, Clarence (Chelena) Deer, George Deer, Ronald Deer, John Deer Jr., Chester (Auchee) Frye, Paul Frye, Tony Frye, and his uncle, John (Linda) Atchico, who James always considered a brother; sisters, Janice Deer, Brenda (Gary) DeRosier, Judy (George) Coser, Cynthia Frye, Rita Morgan, Victoria Frye, and Emma Sue Frye; children, Tonia George with five children, Sarah (Ernesto) Akothe with "Bear" Blanchard, Elmonzo Deer, John Wahwasuk and family, Tim Martinez and family, Winter Dawn Martinez and son, Tecumseh Martinez, and Tewa Martinez. Other relatives include his special Onzahwah cousins and numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins. Tribal rights were held in McLoud, Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, with Kerman Wahpekeche officiating. Burial was at the Kickapoo Tribal Cemetery in McLoud. Traditional duties for the family were performed by Larry Coffey.
