He was a member of St. Bridget's Church in the town of Seymour since 1965 and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Strickland since 1970. He also supported T.V. Mass (Diocese of La Crosse) since 2008 when unable to physically attend Mass.

He enlisted in the Army in 1949 serving in Security Agency Signal Corp. as Staff Sergeant. He was based in Kansas, Georgia, Pennsylvania and finally in Fairbanks, Alaska during the Korean War. He was discharged in November 1952.

Gerald married Sylvia Phetteplace in 1958 in Weyerhaeuser at St. Peter & Paul Parish. He attended DeVry Technology Institute in Chicago graduating with a degree in Electronic technology and design, getting a job with General Mills in Minnesota and then served as a systems electronics technician in Fargo, N.D., Wausau and ending his 32 years of service with the Federal Aviation Agency at the airport in Eau Claire.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Sylvia; four sons, Gerald, Jr. (Nancy) of Mukwonago, Donald (Wendy) of Amery, Anthony (Rita) of Eau Claire and Steven (Laura) of Elk Mound; one daughter, Kathleen (Jack) Cummings of Endeavor, Wis.; two brothers, James (Janet) and Robert (Geri) both of Weyerhaeuser; one sister, Judith (Paul) Hermas of Elkhorn, Wis.; 11 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

He enjoyed canoeing and camping with family and Boy Scouts (where he was a member). He greatly enjoyed attending Eagle Scout ceremonies for his sons.
He was a member of the Chippewa Wildlife Society.

Everyone has their special interest life. Gerry's was the forest. He planted thousands after thousands of trees since his retirement in 1983 at his home south of Chippewa at his acreage in Rusk and Barron counties and then he purchased his grandparents homestead in 1990 so he had more space for planting. He named them White Eagle Tree Farms.
He was a lifetime member of the American Foresters Association, National Woodland Owners Association, Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association, V.F.W. Post 5780 in Weyerhaeuser, and the American Legion Post 77 in Chippewa Falls; member of the Barron County Woodland Owners Assoc.; charter member of the Indianhead Gem & Mineral Assoc.; member of the National Active & retired Federal Employees, A.A.R.P., Packers fan and shareholder, and had his Ham Radio Operators license for 60 years, K9dbk.

He was very proud to be a second generation from Poland. He loved his family dearly but had a hard time showing it. He was known to all of them as Dzia Dzia - polish for Grandpa.
