Martha M. Bruggman, 78, formerly of Lax Lake, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006 at Fairview Northland Medical Center in Princeton, Minn. She was born May 5, 1928 to Francis and Myrtle (Nelson) Sheils in Watertown, Tenn.
As a young girl she lived in Wrenshall until 10th grade when she moved to Duluth and attended Denfeld High School where she graduated. She worked at Kapus Motors as a bookkeeper and married Ralph on Aug. 23, 1947.
In 1952 Martha moved to Silver Bay, as Ralph worked for Hunkin, Arundel and Dixon, the firm that built former Reserve Mining Company. Martha and Ralph together built their home on Lax Lake. Martha worked for the North Shore Federal Credit Union, Silver Bay until retiring. Ralph and Martha wintered in Ft. Meyers, Florida. After Ralph passed, she wintered in Florida with her 'Little Buddy' Bernice Dittmer. When her health deteriorated she moved to Ogilvie, Minn., to live and be cared for by her son and daughter-in-law.
She enjoyed knitting, counted cross-stitch and in her younger years fishing, hunting and flying airplane as a licensed pilot.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph; and grandson, Ernest.
Martha is survived by her son, David (Suzanne) of Ogilvie, Minn.; daughter, Barbara Bruggman of Tuscon, Ariz.; brothers, Carroll (Zona) Sheils of Duluth, James (Kay) Sheils of Two Harbors and Kenneth (Rose) Sheils of Grand Marais; grandchildren, Daniel (Rachel) Hedberg, Matthew Hedberg, Amanda Bruggman and Scott Bruggman; great-grandchildren, Athena Hedberg and Kyle Hedberg; and many nieces and nephews.
VISITATION:9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service, Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006 in Faith Lutheran Church, Silver Bay. Memorials preferred to the Lupus Foundation. Burial will be at Sawtooth Mountain Cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.
