Frank 'Ron' Puig died peacefully surrounded by his loving wife and family on Saturday, March 29th at Sunrise Home in Two Harbors, Minn. He was born Dec. 10, 1937 to Frank E. Puig and Ellen (Bodeen) Puig in Washburn, Wis. He grew up in Herbster and graduated from South Shore High School in Port Wing, WI, where he excelled in basketball, baseball, and football. On Oct. 26, 1957 he married Janet 'Meg' Gierzak and moved to Silver Bay, Minn. where he was employed by Reserve Mining Co. until the plant closed in 1986. He then became a sawyer and loved this pastime sawing logs and feeding deer until his retirement in 2005. Even though Ron suffered from Alzheimers for many years, he never lost his life-long spirit of kindness and generosity. Ron was active in youth sports; coaching baseball, hockey, and football. He also formed a young Silver Bay fastpitch softball team called the Merchants to keep the interest of fastball alive in the area. Ron was a premiere fastpitch softball pitcher known throughout the region. He was also an avid Packer backer and collected Packer memorabilia. The Lakers and Braves were among his favorite sports teams. His parents preceded him in death. Ron is survived by the love of his life, Meg, of 50 years; his sons Ronald (Debbie Tibbetts) of Pike Lake, Minn. and Jay of Isanti, Minn.; his daughters Julie (Clarence Housey) of Silver Bay, Minn., Lisa (Garry) Coyle of Cottage Grove, Minn., and Jodi (Tim) Laeupple of Eveleth, Minn.; his two brothers, Bob and Jim of Tucson, Ariz.; his grandchildren Kyler, Brady (Danielle Kindstrand), Jordan, Emily, Megan, Jacob, and Nathan; great grandson Isaiah and his brother Chance; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the Sunrise Home staff for their wonderful and compassionate care. A special thank you to Dr. Mark Goellner for his years of dedication to Ron and his family, and also to Father Frank Paquette. MEMORIAL MASS:11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Silver Bay on Wednesday, April 2, 2008. Visitation is one hour before Mass. Burial will be at Sawtooth Mt. Cemetery at a later date.
