Med Julius 'M.J.' Hawkins -- Norway

Funeral services for Med Julius "M.J." Hawkins, 75, of Norway, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at Bushy Pond Baptist Church in Norway, with the Rev. James E. Holiday officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church for viewing at 1 p.m.
Mr. Hawkins died Tuesday, Aug. 22, at Heartland Hospice in Augusta, Ga.
He was born September 7, 1930, in Orangeburg County, a son of the late Cornelius and Lumisher Edwards Hawkins. He was married to the late Bessie B. Hawkins for 45 years.
Mr. Hawkins graduated from the public schools of Orangeburg County and completed two years at South Carolina State College. At an early age, he joined Bushy Pond Baptist Church in Norway and was a dedicated and faithful servant until his health began to fail. For many years, he served as superintendent of Sunday School, chairman of the Trustees Board and was a member of the Gospel Choir and Men's Chorus.
He was a member of the Norway Town Council, served as the past Worshipful Master of the Bushy Pond Masonic Lodge, was secretary of the Beaver Creek Baptist Sunday School Convention for many years and was treasurer of the Beaver Creek Baptist Association for many years. He also served on the Lower Savannah Council Commission.
He enjoyed taking care of church business and taking care of his farm animals.
He is survived by three brothers, Robert Hawkins of Capital Heights, Md., George Hawkins of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Benjamin Holiday of Norway; a niece whom he raised as his own, Robin (Kermath) Hawkins Simmons of Salisbury, Md.; and other loving relatives and friends.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bushy Pond Baptist Church on Wire Road in Norway.
Friends may call at the residence and at W. B. Crumel Funeral Home in North.
