Everett Theodore Bassett, 86, of Cloquet died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003 in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.

He was born Nov. 22, 1917 in Cloquet to Benjamin and Adeline (LaVoie) Bassett. A lifelong resident of the Cloquet area, Everett was a truck driver for the Cloquet Creamery from 1935 until 1941. He married Lorraine Lemieux in 1940 in Cloquet. He worked at U.S. Steel for one year and later in a logging camp in the Isabella area until he was called to serve his country. Everett served in the U.S. Marines during World War II and participated in the Pacific campaign. After the war, he returned to Cloquet where he drove truck for the Cloquet Creamery, Ekberg Lumber and retired from Dahlen Transport in 1974. His first wife Lorraine died in 1971. He married Patricia ''Pat'' Blunt in 1974. She also preceded him in death in 2000. Everett was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, the Fond du Lac Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa and in recent years served as a tribal elder. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 262, was a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1163, a life member of the Hebert Kennedy VFW Post 3979, and a member of the Retiree's Teamster Club 346. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and ricing. He also enjoyed wintering in Arizona.

In addition to his first wife, Lorraine and his second wife, Pat; Everett was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary; son-in-law, Johnny Polo; brothers, Burton and Wilfred Bassett; sisters, Marcelline Ojibway, Mildred Tyman, Beatrice Harrison, and Adeline Harens.

He will be sadly missed by his children, Jeanne Polo of Cloquet, James (Linda) Bassett of Cloquet, Lee Ann (Morris) Nicholson of Cottage Grove; brothers, Arnold (Caroline) Bassett and Robert (Dorothy) Bassett both of Cloquet; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Polo) Burkhart, Christopher Polo, Stephanie Polo, Lisa (Nicholson) Johnson, Barbara (Nicholson) Girgen, Troy Bassett and Eric Bassett; ten great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by stepsons, Michael (Lynn) Blunt of Fountain Hills, Arizona, Patrick (Sandy) Blunt of Aitkin, and Keith (Karen) Blunt of Duluth; stepdaughters, Krystal (James) Fields of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Dee McLain of Superior. Everett will also be sadly missed by his snowbird friends in Arizona.

VISITATION: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003 with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St. in Cloquet. Visitation will continue from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003 in Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet. Burial will be in New Calvary Cemetery in Cloquet. Military Honors will be accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow at the Fond du Lac Tribal Center. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home in Cloquet.
