Funeral services for Albert S. Acker, 93, long-time Olney resident, are set for 10 a.m. Saturday in Lunn Funeral Home Chapel. He died Tuesday, Jan. 2,1996, in a Long view nursing home.
Acker graduated from Central High School at Fort Worth where he participated in athletics. Following high school, he attended Texas Christian University where he was a star football player. Acker was a 1928 graduate of Texas Christian University where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He came to Olney High School as a coach during B.C. Shulkey's tenure as superintendent. He was a successful coach at Olney High school winning five district titles and four regional titles in football. His basketball teams were also successful, winning the district title every year and playing in the state finals against Temple High School one year.
When B.C. Shulkey moved to Borger as superintendent, Acker followed him as coach. He remained one year and resigned to take a position as District Manager of Community Public Service Co. for 10 years. He resigned to return to Olney to enter business here in 1944 having Acker Furniture and Hardware until he retired after over 35 years as owner. He sold his business in 1975.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma, in 1950 and his wife, Lillian, died in 1991.
He had served as a member of Olney school board and as deacon at First Baptist Church in Olney where he was a member.
Survivors include two sons, Jim Acker of Longview and Sid Acker of Dallas; six grandchildren; and ten greatgrandchildren.
