McHENRY – Dorothy M. "Dottie" Becker, 83, of McHenry, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Alden Terrace of McHenry.
She was born Nov. 22, 1929, in Chicago, to George and Mary (Norman) Cox. On May 20, 1950, she married Irvin H. Becker at St. Constance Church in Jefferson Park, Chicago.
Born and raised in Chicago, Dorothy moved to McHenry in 1958. She retired after 17 years of working as a cashier for the Eagle Food Store. For many years, she volunteered at Villa Desiderata and at Hospice of Northeastern Illinois Foundation. She received an award from the Hospice for many years of dedicated service.
Dorothy was a member of The Church of Holy Apostles and was instrumental in the starting of the church cemetery and the adoration chapel.
Dorothy enjoyed sewing, baking (homemade breads), home crafts (known for her Christmas gingerbread houses), gardening and snow skiing (which she learned to do at the age of 50).
Dorothy and Irv were "frequent flyers" and enjoyed traveling together. Travels included two trips to Italy, trips to Medjugorje and Alaska, and many trips to Hawaii.
She is survived by Irvin, her husband of 62 years; four children, Cathie Becker of Corvallis, Ore., Ken (Rita) Becker of Wonder Lake, Margie (Tony) Dries of Scottsdale, Ariz., and John (Vicki) Becker of Algonquin; seven grandchildren, Rachel (Sean) Mullen, Nicole Frantz, Ryan Dries, Michelle Frantz, Meagan and Katie Dries, and Nathan Becker; and a sister, Frances (the late Raymond) Nowak of Fond du Lac, Wis.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Frantz; three sons, James, Timothy and Thomas, all in infancy; her parents; three brothers; and three sisters.
Friends may greet the family from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral Mass on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at The Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 W. Bull Valley Road, McHenry, IL 60050.
Inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in The Church of Holy Apostles Cemetery, McHenry.
