Franklin Baumgart was the son of Henry and Alice Baumgart. He worked for the Baltimore Sun newspaper.
As a member of the Maryland National Guard, Franklyn was deployed with other members of his unit in 1916 to the Texas/Mexico border when President Wilson nationalized Guard units from around the nation to assist with defending the Texas/US border against raids from Mexican bandits, most notebly those led by the infamous Pancho Villa.
