Lifetime San Luis Valley resident Floyd D. Chiles, 79, passed away under hospice care at the family home near Hooper, Colo. on Sat, March 29, 2008.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine, his parents and two sisters.
Floyd was born April 18, 1928 in Moffat, Colo. and grew up on the family homestead. He spent his summers working with his father contracting with various ranches and farms throughout the northern portion of the valley. After completing high school, Floyd joined the Army and served at the end of WWII. Using the GI bill, Floyd obtained his college degree in education and returned to the Moffat area where he taught high school math and coached.
Floyd and his growing family moved to Hooper/Mosca area where he continued his teaching and coaching career while pursuing his master's degree. He advanced to administration in the Sangre de Cristo school district and served as the Superintendent for many years, finally retiring from the position in 1988. In addition to his career as an educator, Floyd was a full-time farmer raising alfalfa and cattle. Floyd and his son Terry formed a partnership and switched the operation from cattle to potatoes. He served as a longtime member of the Rio Grande Water Conservancy Board and was also a board member of various other organizations in the San Luis Valley.
Floyd was dedicated to his family and as an educator shaped many lives through his commitment to the community. He had a great respect for nature and loved to hunt and fish.
He is survived by his children Terry Chiles of Hooper, Ricki (Gary) Smith of Rye, Colo, Beverly (Don) Johnson of Englewood, Colo, Barbara (Richard) Grandell of Mosca, Linda (Tom) Black of Aurora, Colo, Bill Chiles of Broomfield, Colo. and Michael Chiles of Hooper; grandchildren Robbie, Ashley, Ronnie and Jessie Chiles, Tate, Jeff and Trent Smith, Melisa and Donnie Johnson, Joshua and Tim Grandell, Christie (Grandell) Montoya, Merisa (Grandell) Armstrong, Jenny and Chris Black, Janese, Tarah and Kirsten Chiles along with seven great-grandchildren.
He was cremated, and a memorial service took place at 6 pm Fri, April 25, 2008 at the Sangre de Cristo High School in Mosca. A community dinner followed services. Inurnment was Sat, April 26 at 10 am at Rito Alto cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations through Strohmayer's Funeral Home that will be used to establish a scholarship in Floyd's honor.
