Burial 2:30 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2013 at Garnavillo Cemetery, Garnavillo, Iowa.
Ila Mae Chettinger, 96, of Friendship Village, died at Friendship Village, Sunday, January 6, 2013. Ila Mae was born in Zimmerman, Minnesota, September 7, 1916, the daughter of Samuel and Minnie Baker Emmons.
She grew up on her family farms, graduated from Lamont High School, and later received a BA in Education from Upper Iowa University and Masters in Education from University of Northern Iowa.
Ila Mae married Gerald "Chet" Chettinger June 13, 1935, in Garnavillo, Iowa. He died October 27, 1992.
She worked at Chamberlain Manufacturing during WW II, taught all grades in country schools in Fayette and Clayton County, taught 3rd grade in Arlington in the 1950's and at Irving Elementary School in Waterloo from 1968 to 1980.
Ila Mae was a member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church and volunteered at Covenant Medical Center.
She is survived by her son Gerald LaVerne (Lois) Chettinger of Cherokee, IA; daughter Carol Gladys (Bob) Schamberger of Garland, TX; six grandchildren: Gerald M. (Cindy) Chettinger, Kathryn A. (Al) Parvu, Maria E. Stines, Teri (Bryan) Leverett, Pamela Schamberger, and Collin Beasley Schamberger; twelve great grandchildren; Lindsey (Ike) Peterson, Jena Chettinger, Ross Chettinger, Skylar James, Paige Stines, Cassy (Jason) Schmall, Elijah (Katie) Stines, Semar James, Drew (Crystal) Parvu, Kyle (Amanda) Parvu, Adam Parvu, Kevin Leverett; six great great grandchildren: Raiden Parvu, Gabriel Parvu, Shantai Richardson, Lillie Richardson, Avery Stines, and Noah Peterson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Shirley Ann Chettinger; daughter-in-law Kay Ileen Chettinger; grandsons Robert LaVerne Schamberger and Bryon Schamberger; seven brothers and sisters: Esther Burington, Helen Davis Jenkins, Birdie Carson, Lizzie Vaprodt, Clarence Emmons, Cecil Emmons, and James Emmons.
