COLUMBIA Thomas "Tom" Henry Ackerman, 85, beloved husband of Glenna D. Ackerman, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Lexington Medical Center after battling months of medical setbacks. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Union United Methodist Church in Irmo on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends following the service.
Born in Walterboro, S.C. on June 25, 1928, Tom was the son of the late Clarence K. Ackerman and Mary B. Ackerman Peeples. A lifelong South Carolinian, Tom grew up in Williston, S.C. where he developed his love of faith, family and country. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Education from the University of South Carolina. It was during his time in the Army when he met a tall, beautiful Texan named Glenna and brought her back to South Carolina as his cherished wife. Their marriage of 58 years and their commitment to each other, their family, and their faith were much admired by everyone who knew them.
Tom began his professional career in Public Education as a teacher and coach in Ridge Spring, S.C. and later became a school administrator in Beaufort and Pamplico. In these beautiful, small South Carolina towns, Tom and Glenna made many lifelong friends. After moving to Columbia, Tom continued with his career by working for the South Carolina Education Association. He became the first Executive Director of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators and worked tirelessly for our public schools until his retirement. He was an active member of Union United Methodist Church for 47 years and was a member of the Fellowship class.
Tom was a passionate man! He loved his Lord God, family, friends, church and country. He also loved the University of South Carolina and was a dedicated Gamecock fan. He attended many decades of USC football games and enjoyed cheering on the Gamecocks in all their sporting events. To his family, he was the most loving, amazing, respected southern gentleman they knew. Left to cherish and honor him are his wife, Glenna of Columbia, daughters, Mrs. Becky (Van) Horton of Chapin, Dr. Mary Audrey Ackerman (Dr. Steve) Storick of Columbia, Mrs. Glenna Dean (Joe) Wildt of Columbia, brother Dr. Robert "Bob" (May) Ackerman of Lexington, most precious grandchildren, Thomas Horton, William Horton, Ginny Storick, Rochelle Storick, Sarah Wildt who all loved their "PaPa" so much and nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Mary, his sister, Bettye Ackerman Jaffe and brother, Ricky Ackerman. Memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church Building Fund or Epworth Children's Home in Columbia.
