97 Squadron's Avro Lancaster I (#R5502), with an aircrew of seven, took off from Wood Hall Spa for an air operation over Nuremberg, Germany. The Lancaster was shot down by a German fighter over Belgium, crashing near Maurage in the province of Hainaut and taking the lives of the entire crew.
