Leading figure in the political history of the Cherokee Nation.Husb. of Jane Riley Carter; parents of Richard Riley; Alexander T.; John Ross; Judge Benj.Wisner Carter; Diana(W.Parrott); Sallie F.(Looney Rattling Gourd); Thos. Jefferson; Nancy; David Tecumseh; Osceola Parvel Carter; & Jennie Pocahantas Carter. He was the son of Nathaniel Carter who was a white captive of Indians(c 1780) kept in the Cherokee Nation, eventually attending school in the East. Judge David Carter was Assoc.Justice and later Chief Justice of the Cherokee Supreme Court; delegate to Washington D.C.; Superintendent of the Cherokee Nation schools; and editor at the Cherokee Advocate (Nation newspaper).
