|Death: ||Feb. 24, 1892|
James B. Ashmore died of pleurisy at his home on Wednesday, February 24, 1892. He was only 37 years old and left behind his young pregnant wife, Ella Foster Ashmore, and six children, the oldest being only 12. His seventh child, a son, was born six months later.
Excerpt from his obituary -
Mr. Ashmore was one of the most worthy members of our community, known as a laboring man, and while his persistent manly labor had not brought him that amount of this world's goods that his best friends could have wished, yet his amiable disposition and his energetic and persevering efforts to supply his large family of little children and keep them at the district school, won for him the fervent friendship of all who knew him. The writer has been present at many deathbed scenes, but never saw a more touching and unbearable grief and sorrow exhibited by anyone in going through the trying ordeal of final separation in the chamber of death than was feit by Mrs. Ashmore, when called to give up the fond and indulgent husband that he had always been, and to assume alone the weighty responsibility of caring for the six orphaned children that He who knows the heart and provides a way had given them. To her it seemed almost unbearable and we all know and deplore her situation. But friends of her and her husband's are both numerous and generous, and will undoubtedly lend her a helping hand.
Mr. Ashmore became a member of the Harmony M.E. Church in 1881 and since has lived a pious Christian life.
