Orland Unit, Friday, 8 May 1931:

Mrs. Milton Barnes died Tuesday morning in a hospital in San Francisco, following a surgical operation. The remains were brought to Orland yesterday, and the funeral will be held from the Steuben ranch tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Interment will take place in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
Mrs. Barnes had been in seemingly good health up to about ten weeks ago, when she was taken severely ill, and was taken to a hospital. She underwent an operation almost immediately, from which she seemed to be recovering, till conditions developed that made necessary a second operation, which was performed on Monday evening, and from which she failed to rally.
Mrs. Barnes, whose maiden name was Anna Steuben, was born and raised on the Steuben ranch near Orland. She went to school at Plaza, and also was a student in the old Orland college. Later she attended the Stockton college, where she was graduated and granted teacher's credentials. Twenty-two years ago she was married to Mr. Milton Barnes, and since that time had made her home with her husband, first in Oakland, and of late years in San Francisco.
The deceased leaves, beside the sorrowing husband, a mother, Mrs. Metta Steuben, and brothers George and Henry Steuben, all of Orland. Sisters Grace Steuben and Lily Christian of Orland.
Mrs. Barnes was a member of the Eastern Star, holding her membership in the Willows Chapter, and also a member of the Orland Rebekah lodge. She had a large circle of friends, many of whom had known her since babyhood, who will join with the family in sorrow over her departure from among them. Transcribed by E.
