She was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner in 1957, prior to being united in marriage there with Kenneth Carl Diemer on June 2, 1957. Joyce and Kenneth settled on what would become the Diemer Family Farm located ten miles north and east of Sumner. The couple was blessed with four sons, Curt, Jim, Dale, and Jack. After those four attempts with no daughter to bring home, they adopted Dana, from Seoul, South Korea in November of 1970. Joyce continued to flourish in her faith and became active in the congregation at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Richfield in rural Sumner.
After heart valve surgery at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, Joyce's recovery was arduous and very difficult at times. She spent her last days under the care and supervision of the staff of Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner. Her death occurred there on Sunday evening, November 28, 2010, with family at her side. She was 73 years old and among her many pleasures, she enjoyed nurturing her family and her flower gardens.
In addition to her husband, Ken of rural Sumner, she is survived by four sons, Curt (Cindy) of Auburn, Illinois, Jim (Christy) and Dale (Cindy) of Sumner, and Jack of Colorado, Springs, Colorado; one daughter, Dana of Chanhassen, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Leyh and Larry (LaVonne) Leyh, both of Sumner; three sisters, Yvonne (Wayne) Lienau of Sumner, Gwendolyn (Dennis) Hart of Clarksville, and Carole (Jack) Huntley of Independence; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Matthew in 1988, and Mabel in 2003.
FuneralServices will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 3, 2010, at St. Peter Lutheran Church-Richfield in rural Sumner with Rev. Harold Peterson officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, December 2, 2010, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. Interment will be at Richfield Cemetery in rural Sumner. The family suggests that memorials may be made in Joyce's name to Community Memorial Hospital Building Fund in Sumner.
