Nicolasa "Nicky" Gonzales was born on December 6, 1920 in Bueyeros, New Mexico to Pablo Ortega and Utima Ortega. Her mother died when she was small and her brother and eight sisters went to live with adoptive families, with sisters of the Catholic Church, and at times, to orphanages. Of those, a brother and sister survived. Nicky found a loving family in Victor and Petra Martinez of Logan, New Mexico who had no children of their own, but raised nieces and nephews who were as brothers and sisters to Nicky. Her adoptive father and mother worked for ranchinf families of the area and Nicky was schooled at the ranch with the children of Gallegos. The laughed together, went riding together and went to community dances and to Catholic Church at the Gallegos Ranch. It was at such a dance that she met her husband, Domingo Gonzales. They were married three months after on August 17, 1940. They had a golden anniversary at 50 years and were married for 62 years. Nicky worked with her husband at YMB Ranch, where he was a cowboy. She cooked for the ranchers, drove chuck wagons, rode the prairies with Domingo, camped on mesas and buttes and watched thunderstorms and shooting stars. Later she moved to Oregon with her husband and his sister's family, where they settled in the rural Polk County area and came to reside on the small farm where they were for more than 50 years. They loved the green trees and irises, lilacs and roses in her garden. They had fruit trees and grew fresh sweet corn, tomatoes, green beans, pinto beans and New Mexico green chili. They canned, preserved and made fresh apple and wild blackberry pie and baked fresh bread together. They visited family in New Mexico as much as they could and thought someday they would return. Nicky always had puppy dogs from when she was a small girl and loved them as family. She sewed, crocheted roses and did delicate embroidery. She is loved as a wife, gentle mother to her daughter and nieces and nephews that she raised, and as a member of her church family at St. Philips Catholic Church, in her love and faith in God. She is preceded in death by a baby boy, who died when her husband was at war, her husband, Domingo, her brother, Domingo, her sister Pablita, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. SURVIVORS:
