After graduating from high school he attended Newport News Apprentice School. Starting in 1944 he proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific. Following the war, he attended the College of William and Mary where he met his wife of 62 years, the love of his life, Pat. After graduating from W&M in 1949 he attended Dental School at the Medical College of Virginia. He had a successful dental practice in Portsmouth for 36 years. During that time he was also a civic leader spending time as President of the Craddock Jaycees and a member of the Portsmouth School Board. He was also instrumental in establishing the first library in Norfolk County and the Churchland Swim and Racquet Club. He also continued to serve in the Naval Reserves retiring in 1981 as a Commander. Having retired from dentistry in Portsmouth, Bob and Pat moved to Lake Monticello near Charlottesville, Va.
