William W. Allmond Jr.

Gloucester lost one of it's well known citizens on June 24 in the death of W. W. Allmond, Jr. He was the son of Captain William Walter Allmond and his wife, Catherine VanNaume Allmond, of Staten Island, N.Y. He was born in Allmondsville on September 27, 1873.

Allmond's Wharf was built by his father, and he and his father were well known for their fine York River oysters. He had a merchantile business and was postmaster at Allmondsville for many years. He also had one of Gloucester's pioneer chicken hatcheries.

He was married November 6, 1896, to Miss Emmie Catherine Roane and had two children, William Walter III, and Mary Davis Allmond. He lost his wife in June, 1933, and later married Mrs. Alberta Graves Hardy, of Middlesex. He was a member of Bellamy Methodist Church.

Mr. Allmond was elected to membership in Botetout Lodge No. 7, AF & AM on October 4, 1895, and on December 28, 1895, he was made a Master Mason. From this time until his death he was continuously a member of the lodge, being its oldest member at the time of this death. Had he lived until December 28 of this year, he would have been a Mason of fifty years in good standing, an honor and distinction appropriately recognized by the fraternity.

He was buried with Masonic honors June 26 at Bellamy Church's Cemetery, the Masonic ceremonies at the grave being conducted by T. W. Cooke. The services in the church were conducted by the Rev. Raymond Cardwell, with music rendered by Mrs. L. C. Harper, Mrs. Martin Kerns and Mrs. Cardwell.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alberta G. Allmond; one son, William Walter Allmond III; one daughter, Mrs. Mary (Charles H.) Allmond Quast; three grandsons, Walter Edward Allmond, Charles Quast, and Allmond Quast; one brother, C. C. Allmond of Gloucester; three sisters, Mrs. M. B. Seward, of Alexandria; Mrs. Frank Shackelford, of Newport News, and Mrs. Harry Baker, of Baltimore, and nieces and nephews.
