In the late 1940's and early 1950's she and her family moved from Taylor's Ferry to Wagoner. Kathleen then attended Wagoner schools graduating from Wagoner High School in 1954. During High School Kathleen participated in FHA, art appreciation, girls' basketball, softball, played the French horn in band and was a member of the Crossword Puzzle Club. After high school, Kathleen went to work for Bell Telephone and worked there as a telephone operator on the peg switch board system. On April 8, 1959 she married Arlie L. Gritts in Miami. She and Arlie lived in Sand Springs until July, 1961. In 1961 she and Arlie moved to Broken Arrow where they raised their family of one son and two daughters. While her children were in school, Kathleen participated in many school activities of her children. She was past president of Southside Elementary School, PTA member and Home Room monitor. She enjoyed being a parent sponsor as her children participated in Cub Scouts, Brownies, choir, FFA, band, Flag Drill Team, little league baseball and girls softball. In 1973 with all her children in school she went to work at Wal-Mart #53 as Toy Department Manager. She worked for Wal-Mart until her retirement in March 1998. After retirement, Kathleen enjoyed traveling a little around the country to visit and to travel with her sisters in Arizona and Georgia. One of her favorite pastimes in the last few years was "playing the slot machines" as she traveled around with friends and family. Kathleen lived in Broken Arrow until September 2006 when she moved to the family farm in Tahlequah. She had been a Broken Arrow resident for 45 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlie L. Gritts in 2002; her parents; a brother, Harold Thomas of Tulsa and a sister Wilma Ruth Thomas of Wagoner.
Visitation will be held on Monday, Oct. 5, 2009 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Reed-Culver Funeral Home in Tahlequah. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009 at the Reed-Culver Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Don Nibblett officiating. Burial will follow at the Double Springs Cemetery near Tahlequah.
