Dorothea Tangren was called to her heavenly rest on Dec. 30. She was 88 and passed away peacefully at her home in Gig Harbor after a long illness. Dorothea was born in Grass Valley, Calif., on Sept. 17, 1917, where her family had established a pear farm in the early 1900s. She met her future husband, Robert Fulton Tangren in high school in 1933. They were married in 1940 and celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary before Fulton passed away in 2003. Together they traveled much in their retirement years and at some point in Fulton?s career, they lived in all four corners of the U.S.
She dedicated her life to caring for her family, and gladly put their needs before her own. She and Fulton were blessed with six children; Robert Jr., Alan, Christina (Schwarz), Gerald, Ernst and William, as well as nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who remember them warmly and miss them dearly. She also loved to cook and was known for adding a creative touch to make each and all of her dishes and desserts special. Her formative experiences on the farm taught her an appreciation for the land, God?s animals and working with her hands. She was tireless with an affinity for flowers, birds and cats and spent much of her time in the garden or getting together with her garden club. During the winter months, she stayed busy with her arts and crafts and spent the rest of her time as a volunteer working with children or helping out at several local charities.
Dorothea was a 34-year resident of Gig Harbor after she and Fulton moved to the area in 1971. Services will take place at 2 p.m. today at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Purdy.
