Robert the son of William and Josie Blackfox of Tahlequah OK entered service (Selective Service) in the US Marine Corps on May 9, 1969 in Oklahoma City OK. He arrived in Vietnam on November 23, and was assigned Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
On February 17, a Marine walking point of a patrol near the Xuan Que village complex in Que Son District, saw what appeared were young children ahead, stopping to allow the rest of the squad to move up he then advanced towards the Vietnamese activating a BT (bobby trap resulting in an explosion.
Immediately following the explosion one of the Vietnamese produced a hidden AK 47 automatic rifle and began to fire at the patrol. The Marines returned fire but the enemy managed to flee into the heavy brush, two patrol members were killed and three were wounded during the confrontation. PFC Blackfox was one of the casualties; he died as a result of multi fragmentation wounds and hostile rife fire.
