Civil War: Battery M and Field & Staff,
2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery

William Benyon Phillips enlisted as a private August 19, 1862, and was mustered into Battery M, 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. Private Phillips was discharged to accept a commission as 2nd Lieutenant and transferred to Field & Staff. Lieutenant Phillips was promoted to 1st Lieutenant April 20, 1864, and assigned as adjutant. Lieutenant Phillips was captured at Petersburg, Virginia, July 30, 1864, and confined at the Union officer's POW camp at Macon, Georgia. Following General Lee's surrender at Appomattox, Virginia, on April 9, 1865, he was paroled and mustered out April 12, 1865.
