Funeral services for Reverend Kenneth James Deere are to be held 1:30PM Monday,June 27,2005,at Salt Creek United Methodist Church north of Holdenville. Lyle Deere, Reverend Alvin Deer and Reverend Dr. Harry Long will officiate.

He passed away at his home in Holdenville, Ok., on Thursday, June 23, 2005, at the age of 69.

Mr. Deere was born June 8, 1936, in Holdenville to Eli Roy and Melissa (Long) Deer.

He was raised in Holdenville and joined the US Marine Corps at the age of 17. Following his military service, he joined the church becoming an ordained elder.

During his forty-three year career with the United Methodist Church, Reverend Deere seered for sixteen years with the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference and twenty-seven years as Associate General Secretary for the General Commission on Religion and Race with the United Methodist Church in Washington,D.C. He retired in July of 2003.

He was preceded in death by his father, Eli Roy Deer. Survivors include his wife,Joni, of the home in La Jolla, California; mother, Melissa Deer of Holdenville; children, Lyle Deere and wife,Joyce, of Muskogee, OK.; Lisa Deere of Muskogee and Johnna Gouge and husband, Leonard, of Coweta, Ok., six grandchildren, Tenetke, Melinda, Kosa, Maria, Paskova and Sukey. Reverend Deere also leaves a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and many, many friends.
