Esther "Tess" Berke died peacefully in her sleep at home, with her family at her side, at the age of 95. Tess was the wife of Adolph Berke and a long time resident of Antioch, where Dr. Berke practiced medicine for more than 30 years.
Tess had three children, James, Sharon and Jerry, all graduates of Antioch Community High School.
She leaves eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Tess had been living outside Philadelphia, PA, with her daughter at the time of her death. Her sense of humor, her style, her joy of life and devotion to her family will be greatly
missed. She was an avid bowler and practiced yoga up to the age of 89.
Tess was the youngest of six children born to Sadie and Benjamin Goldstein in Glassport, PA, on May 12, 1913. Tess moved to Antioch in 1939 with her husband, her childhood sweetheart, where he started his medical practice.
During WW II Dr. Berke served in the US Army. The Berke family returned to Antioch in 1945 where they resided until Dr. Berke's illness and death in 1971. The Berkes were active members of Congregation Am Echod in Waukegan.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 9, 2009 at PETERSON & PATCH FUNERAL HOME 408 North Sheridan Road Waukegan with Rabbi Ze'ev Harari officiating. Tess will be interred next to her late husband at Am Echod Cemetery in Waukegan.
In lieu of flowers donations in Esther Berke's memory may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation 833 West Washington Boulevard Chicago, IL 60607.
