Sangerville - Merrill Dunham Burgess, age 89, passed away October 5, 2016. Born in East Sangerville on October 10, 1926, he was the son of Carroll S Burgess and Eva Leland Burgess.
Upon graduation from Sangerville High School in 1944, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served on the USS Steinaker during WWII. After the war ended, he returned to take over the family farm. He later became a licensed boilerman and worked for many years at Pride Manufacturing and Charleston Correctional Facility.
Merrill is survived by his brother Reynold of Orono, sons Scott and his wife Gail of Exton, PA, Gary and his wife Shelley of Dedham, Dan and his wife Betty of Thomaston, and daughter Mary and her husband Daniel O'Neill of Houston, TX, twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Phyllis Taylor Burgess and by three brothers, Carl, Gordon Sr., and Sumner.
Born in the living room of his family's East Sangerville farm, he enjoyed researching family roots on the internet to identify and contact relatives. He was a deacon for many years at the East Sangerville Union Church. He enjoyed documenting the genealogy of several of his family branches, including Burgess, Leland, Dunham, Weston, Littlefield, Merrill and Pratt. His greatest joy was to follow his grandkids' adventures, whether it be at sports, music or academic events. He enjoyed family get-togethers, especially at Thanksgiving at home. He and Phyllis were considered surrogate grandparents to several young people befriended during their lifetime.
The family would like to thank the caring staffs at Winterberry Heights in Bangor and Hospice of Eastern Maine. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com
